Hard Freeze in Central Florida again Tonight!

We are in trouble in Florida. Another HARD freeze tonight. We didn't see snow but Greg thinks he heard sleet on the roof during the night. OH my gosh. (We are about an hour from Orlando). We may lose our oranges on this one. Just be glad you didn't pay for tickets to a theme park for today. Can you even imagine! It was 33 and raining this morning! Never got to 40 all day! I cannot ever remember anything like this before!!!

We have been nursing a tiny little pineapple that we planted ourselves several years ago and finally this fall...up it came. We were so excited. But when we heard the weather again tonight...Greg cut it and brought it in.

It's only 4.5" high. Just a baby. Probably all green inside but I took a ton of photos of it...such an interesting little guy...I have never painted one before and was really intrigued by the amazing textures on the surface. Painting makes you pay attention, doesn't it? I think it's time to put this little guy into a real painting.

Stay warm guys.

  1. So sorry about the cold, Ginny! Everyone is suffering with it so much and it's gone so deep into the south :( I do love the little pineapple and the sketch you did - what an interesting little fruit!

  2. It was 26 when I got up at 7:30 a.m. We've been setting all-time cold records all week. So sad for all the plants and all the folks who are homeless or do not have heat. I tutor in the Leesburg schools and they do not have indoor hallways there. To get to classes they have to go outside! Some kids here in FL do not own coats! At least the sun is shining! They promise us 70 by next Friday. Anyway...I do love my little pineapple and am thinking of some ways to make a memorial painting to it. And, it smells very pineapply sitting in my studio!

  3. It's colder here near Chicago(of course), but nature is so much more vulnerable to the cold down in Florida. I hope it warms up soon.

  4. 4 below zero at the lake house this morning when we got up to head home for church. Really biting cold. It is beautiful with all the snow, but boy it makes you think of going somewhere warm for the winter. Take a photo of the pineapple next to something small so we can get a feel for the size. Very neat to see. Wish this one had gotten a chance to "grow up".

  5. Chicago area does not sound like the place to be. Someone wrote and said that the South Pole was about the same temp as Orlando yesterday. (It's summer there.) But that did NOT make me feel very good!!! Low temps will gradually rise from 22 tonight to 60 by Friday. Daytime highs from 45 to 71. 72 is about normal for us this time of year. After I do a little more painting of the baby pineapple we will actually cut it open. Who knows...maybe it will still be good. It smells wonderful.

  6. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr. At least the mini pineapple gets to inspire an artist to be creative. Better than freezing on the bush. Happy and warm painting.

  7. Thanks Sandy....nothing like color, texture, AND smell to get one's creative juices flowing. I'll keep you posted on how this goes. Thanks for stopping by.

  9. Ginny, I love this fat little guy! he'd make a great collage. I did a pineapple from a photo my son took in Hawaii, it's really impressionistic, you cant' tell what it is until you step back, mostly because all the greenery is very busy, it's on the plant, the pineapple. I love your sketch and i think it would make a nice paper painting, I'd leave the background very simple though, so much texture in the pineapple itself.

  10. I love the collage idea. I got more rice paper to paint and I think I'll try to paint every shade of yellow and brown and green I can cook up in preparation for trying him. Incidentally. We ATE him last night!!! He was fine...not quite as sweet as a fully grown one but not bad at all and he was yellow and ripe inside!!! (Why it is a "he" I am not sure.) Everything from photos now!!! That's what I get for eating the still life!
